Jayne's Journey: From Cancer Diagnosis to Faith in God

An inspiring story of how Jayne found God amidst her personal life struggles and was led to commit her life and heart to Him.

Consultant

Jayne always believed in God and Jesus, but didn’t go to church. She remembers watching the movie “Jesus of Nazareth” as a child that left a lasting impression on her as she grew up. Then later in life she went through personal struggles and difficult circumstances that gradually led her to seek God.

It all started with a little nosebleed. After visiting the doctors and undergoing a few weeks treatment, Jayne was assured that everything was fine. “But something kept telling me, ‘It’s not right!’” she recalls. Despite further reassurances that all was fine, she couldn't shake off this persistent feeling that something was not right. ‘’I still had this feeling, kept waking up in the night. I had dreams about it, and I kept thinking, ‘It's not right!’”

Determined to find answers, she went back and forth to see several other consultants who also reassured her that everything was fine. Then she went back to them again. “They brought the big man back in, and he said to me, ‘What is your problem? There's nothing wrong with it.’” And she replied, “There is, there's something wrong, I know there is.’’ Then Jayne was scheduled for surgery.

Cancer Diagnosis

“They did the surgery and found a massive tumour in my nose, which was cancerous. And they were shocked. So shocked, they didn't know what to do, because this cancer that I had, people don't survive it. The percentage of someone possibly getting it is 0.01% of the world, that's how rare it is. They don't know how to treat it. There's no cure, but the quicker you had the surgery the better.”

Cancer diagnosis

“The new consultant said that if I had left it, I wouldn’t make Christmas, I’d be dead. So they did the surgery and took it away.”

Reflecting on her journey, Jayne shared with joy and amazement the wonderful way she has seen God at work in her life. “There’s only two men in this country who treated this cancer. I was sent to one of them. Can you see how God was there. Not only did He send me to the hospital, make me fight it, but also sent me to the man who’s the best in Europe.”

The Return of Cancer

Following a later check-up scan, the news came that it was all clear. “But I had that niggle again, that voice. I kept going back to them, ‘There's something wrong. I think it’s back.’”  Then after another appointment they said, “There's something there.” So they performed the surgery and removed it again.

This led to the need of performing a new procedure of nose reconstruction by the surgeon. While sitting in the cubicle, Jayne reached out to God praying that He may watch over her. Then she suddenly realised, “I hadn't found God, but He'd found me. God made it so clear that He was driving me. Why did I argue with five top consultants? Why did I argue back? Why did I insist? I was so driven, that it had to be God, pushing me, because He wanted me to live today.”

Woman praying

Just around that time, her husband Graham wanted to read the Bible. Through his influence she started to become acquainted with the Bible, as he was sharing the things he’s been learning with her during their walks together. God through the Bible and the Holy Spirit was speaking to her heart. She vividly remembers how deeply was touched by Psalm 23, “The Lord is my Shepherd” and the profound way “it captured me.”

As she continued her journey with God, the day came when Jayne decided to accept Jesus as her Lord and Saviour and get baptised, publicly testifying of His love and power in her life.
